I bought Superstar on
December 24th, 1995. My first impression of this album came from the
overture, which is a very unique (that's being polite: it's odd) piece
of music indeed. At the time, most of the music in my CD wallet was 80's
pop, early 90's grunge & alternative. I was shocked by the sound of
Superstar, and in fact by the end of track 1 I was entirely convinced
that I was going to throw the 2 disc set into the trash. Before I could
get to the CD player, track 2 began playing. And forth from my speakers
came a voice which utterly stopped me in my tracks. It was so harsh and
unrefined in its growl-ish screaming.
I thought I hated it,
yet somehow I found myself listening to 'Heaven On Their Minds' over and
over again. Eventually this opened the door to enjoying the rest of the
musical, but still it's Murray Head's raw and tortured portrayal of
Judas that maintained my interest in this now classic show.
